Steps
Reference the GS1 Digital Link URI Syntax standard, Release 1.6.0 (ratified March 2025), as the current normative spec
Construct the URI path using GS1 identification keys (e.g., GTIN via /01/) followed by qualifier key-value pairs (batch/lot, serial number) in the defined order
Add non-GS1 web query parameters after GS1 attribute parameters, keeping the resolvable path structure intact
Encode the Digital Link URI into a QR Code or GS1 DataMatrix per GS1 barcode carrier guidance for the target use case
Configure a Digital Link resolver (or use an existing GS1-conformant resolver) to route scans to product pages, care/compliance info, or traceability data
Known gotchas
Release 1.6.0 (March 2025) is current — older tutorials or cached docs referencing 1.4.0 or earlier describe outdated path/parameter ordering and shouldn't be treated as authoritative
GS1 Digital Link is the URI structure, not the barcode symbol itself — a compliant 2D carrier (QR Code or DataMatrix) still needs to be chosen separately
Query parameter ordering and reserved key handling are strict; a URI that 'looks right' can still fail conformance validation
