Steps

  1. Note that Matter had no dedicated garage-door device type before version 1.5 (released November 2025); earlier "Matter garage door" products worked around this using generic On/Off or Window Covering device types.
  2. For new designs, implement the Matter 1.5 Closure device type composed of one or more Closure Panel endpoints, using the ClosureControl and ClosureDimension clusters to represent movement (sliding, swinging, tilting) and position.
  3. Map a simple garage door to a single Closure Panel reporting an open/closed/opening/closing-equivalent state via ClosureControl rather than a bare on/off outlet.
  4. For existing pre-1.5 devices/bridges, keep exposing garage doors as Window Covering or On/Off for compatibility until controllers and firmware both support the new Closures type.
  5. Validate against the CSA's Matter 1.5 specification and SDK (chip-tool) before certifying, since ecosystem support for the new Closures device type is still rolling out.
