Steps

1. Determine whether your state has a corner perpetuation and filing law (many Western PLSS states do, e.g., California BPC §8760–8774.5, Idaho Title 55 Chapter 16, Nevada NRS Chapter 329) and confirm current filing requirements under that statute.
2. When a corner is found, set, reset, or used as control on a survey, prepare a corner record documenting the monument's condition, ties, and accessories per the statute's required format.
3. File the corner record with the county recorder/county surveyor within the statutory deadline — commonly around 90 days from the date the corner was found, set, reset, or used — verify the exact deadline in your specific state's statute since it is not uniform nationally.
4. Ensure the corner record is signed by a licensed land surveyor; most states restrict filing/recording rights to a PLS (with narrow exceptions for certain federal survey agencies).
5. Retain a copy in the project file and note the recording reference (book/page or instrument number) on subsequent survey plats that rely on that corner.
