Steps
Use BPI's Locator Tool at locate.bpi.org (linked from bpi.org) to search by certification type (e.g., Building Analyst, Energy Auditor, Quality Control Inspector) or by individual name/ID.
Confirm the certification category matches the scope of work being verified — a Building Analyst credential is not the same as a Quality Control Inspector credential.
Cross-check certification currency, since BPI certifications require periodic renewal/CEUs — an expired listing should not be treated as currently valid.
If the professional works for a BPI GoldStar Contractor company, separately confirm the company's GoldStar status via BPI's contractor locator, since company accreditation and individual certification are tracked separately.
Known gotchas
Do not confuse bpi.org (Building Performance Institute, the building-science certifying body) with bpiworld.org (Biodegradable Products Institute, an unrelated compostable-packaging certifier) — both go by "BPI" and this collision is easy to make from search results.
BPI's public locator surfaces active/locatable professionals; it is not guaranteed to be a complete historical registry of every certificate ever issued.
