Steps
Create a Site Profile account at portal.firewise.org and form a resident-led committee (3-5 representatives, including a designated Resident Leader), for a community of at least 8 and no more than 2,500 dwelling units
Complete the Firewise USA Community Risk Assessment for the site
Draft a prioritized Action Plan for risk-reduction projects (including vegetation management/clearing) and homeowner education activities
Submit the Firewise USA Application through the portal, uploading the Risk Assessment and Action Plan, then respond to any revision requests from the CAL FIRE/NFPA review team
Once recognized, complete annual renewal reporting and update the Risk Assessment every 5 years and the Action Plan at least every 3 years
Known gotchas
Recognition is reviewed jointly by CAL FIRE and NFPA and can require multiple revision rounds before approval - budget lead time accordingly
Firewise USA recognition is a community program, not a permit; it doesn't substitute for any required local tree-removal or burn permits for the vegetation work itself
Failing to complete annual renewal reporting can put a community's Firewise status at risk of lapsing
