In the HLS or DASH output group, set AutomatedEncodingSettings with the AbrSettings object; remove manually specified video output renditions — Automated ABR creates them automatically
Set the QVBR quality level for the top rendition; MediaConvert derives lower renditions by analyzing scene complexity across the title
Optionally constrain the minimum and maximum renditions and bitrates within AbrSettings to align with your delivery budget
Leave audio and caption outputs in the group as usual; only video renditions are auto-generated
After the job completes, review the generated rendition set in the job response to confirm resolution and bitrate choices match your expectations before promoting to production
Known gotchas
Automated ABR is only available in the on-demand Professional pricing tier; reserve pricing tier jobs must use manual rendition ladders
You cannot mix manually specified video outputs with Automated ABR outputs in the same output group — the job will fail with a validation error
Automated ABR generates up to 5 renditions with bitrates between approximately 600 Kbps and 8 Mbps; sources that require higher peak bitrates (e.g., HDR cinema) need manual ladder configuration
