Request API access credentials from ABC Legal; the API requires a commercial account and credentials are provisioned by ABC Legal's integration team
Authenticate to the ABC Legal API using the credential method specified in your account documentation and include the auth token in all API request headers
Submit a service order by POSTing to the service order endpoint with the document to be served (as a base64-encoded payload or a file URL), the defendant name, the service address, and the case reference number
Receive a service order ID in the response; poll the order status endpoint with this ID or configure a webhook callback URL in the order payload to receive real-time delivery status updates
When service is confirmed, the API returns an affidavit of service; download and attach it to the case file for court filing
Known gotchas
ABC Legal supports both traditional and electronic service of process; electronic service is only valid where the defendant has consented or where court rules permit electronic service — verify applicability before ordering
Service orders may have jurisdiction-specific requirements for accepted document formats, service methods, and required number of copies; query these constraints from the API or configuration documentation before submission
International service orders (available in 80-plus countries) have significantly longer turnaround times and different fee structures than domestic U.S. service
