Steps
Pull the current text of Chapter 5J-17, F.A.C. ('Professional Surveyors and Mappers') from flrules.org rather than an old PDF, since the Florida Board of Professional Surveyors and Mappers updates rules periodically.
For boundary work, apply Rules 5J-17.051 and 5J-17.052 (Standards of Practice — Boundary Survey Requirements), which set the field procedure and precision requirements for boundary surveys performed in Florida.
Apply Rule 5J-17.053 (Standards of Practice — Professional Matters in Surveying and Mapping) for certification language, professional responsibility, and general practice requirements.
Ensure monuments are marked with a durable marker/cap bearing the surveyor's license number or firm name, are detectable by conventional instrumentation, and use approved alternate monumentation in hard surfaces (asphalt/concrete) where a standard monument can't be set.
If delivering digital coordinate files with the survey, include the required statement about intended display scale, and use Rule 5J-17.085 (Survey Review) guidance if the survey will undergo formal review.
Known gotchas
Florida's minimum technical standards apply on top of, not instead of, any ALTA/NSPS or other client-specified standard — a survey can satisfy ALTA/NSPS Table A items and still fail Florida's monument or precision rules if not checked separately.
Rule numbering and content have changed over past updates; always verify against the live flrules.org text for the current rule set rather than a firm's old internal template.
Monument-marking requirements (durable cap with license number, detectability) are specific and are commonly missed on rush jobs — build them into field crew checklists.
