Review the Da Vinci PDex Plan-Net IG (hl7.org/fhir/us/davinci-pdex-plan-net) to understand the provider directory profiles including PlannetPractitionerRole, PlannetNetwork, PlannetOrganization, and PlannetLocation.
Search for PractitionerRole resources using Plan-Net specific search parameters such as network, location, specialty, and organization: GET [base]/PractitionerRole?network=[Network-id]&specialty=[NUCC-code].
Retrieve the referenced Network resource from PractitionerRole.network to obtain network name, type, and coverage area, and check Network.active to filter to active networks.
Retrieve the referenced Location resources via PractitionerRole.location to obtain practice addresses and office hours, and check Location.status for active locations.
Retrieve the referenced Practitioner via PractitionerRole.practitioner to obtain the provider's name, NPI (via identifier), qualifications, and communication languages.
Implement forward-compatible handling for Plan-Net search parameters using the defined search parameter definitions rather than assuming generic FHIR search parameter names, as Plan-Net defines network-specific parameters not in base FHIR.
Known gotchas
Plan-Net defines extension-based search parameters (e.g., on Network) that require server-side support declaration in the CapabilityStatement — clients should check the CapabilityStatement for supported search parameters before constructing queries.
Network.partOf is used for multi-tiered network hierarchies; a flat query for network membership without following partOf relationships may miss practitioners who are in a sub-network of the queried network.
Provider directory data in Plan-Net is often stale; the IG recommends that clients check the lastUpdated element and that servers implement a lastUpdated search parameter — clients should not assume real-time accuracy.
