Sign up for an API key at the NLR Developer Network, the successor to developer.nrel.gov, which was retired May 29, 2026.
Call the Laws and Incentives (transportation) API endpoint, filtering by state and/or technology or fuel type such as electric.
Parse returned records for incentive type, jurisdiction, amount, and status, since the dataset intentionally retains historical entries.
Cross-check any incentive intended to inform a purchase or tax decision against the authoritative state/federal source before presenting it as final.
Cache results and refresh periodically, since laws and incentives data changes on a legislative cadence, not in real time.
Known gotchas
Any code or bookmarked docs still pointing at developer.nrel.gov will fail — that domain was fully retired at the end of May 2026 in favor of developer.nlr.gov (existing API keys still work, only the host changed).
The dataset explicitly includes expired and repealed laws, so a naive integration that doesn't filter on status will surface stale incentives as if active.
Coverage and update lag vary by state; treat this as a discovery dataset, not a real-time authoritative eligibility engine.
