Mark up the page as Article, NewsArticle, or BlogPosting with the recommended properties: headline, image (multiple aspect ratios), datePublished, dateModified, and author
Follow author markup best practices - use Person or Organization type, list multiple authors as separate entries, and link author.url to a bio/profile page
Validate with the Rich Results Test and fix critical errors, understanding that non-critical warnings don't block eligibility
Ensure canonical URLs on multi-part articles point to a single canonical or 'view-all' page, not page 1 of a series
Submit/update your sitemap so Google can discover and re-crawl the page promptly after adding markup
Known gotchas
Google explicitly states there is no structured-data markup requirement for Google News features like Top Stories - Article markup helps Google understand the page but does not itself grant eligibility
