Engage Experian to provision a Clarity Services account and obtain credentials for the alternative financial services data API; a separate data-use agreement covering nonprime/alternative credit data is required
Authenticate using the credential flow specified in your Clarity Services provisioning documentation (OAuth 2.0 client-credentials or API-key-based depending on product configuration)
Submit an inquiry for the consumer using identifying information (name, address, SSN, date of birth) to the Clarity Services inquiry endpoint
Parse the FCRA-regulated response for indicators of alternative financial services usage: payday loans, installment loans, rent-to-own, check cashing, pawn, and prepaid card activity
Integrate the Clarity data alongside traditional bureau scores in your underwriting model; for thin-file or no-hit consumers, Clarity data may provide the only available credit signal
Store the response under FCRA retention and handling requirements; ensure adverse action notices reference Clarity Services (Experian) as the consumer reporting agency if the data factors into a denial
Known gotchas
Clarity Services data is FCRA-regulated — it is a CRA product, not a marketing or analytics data feed; permissible purpose, adverse action, and dispute handling requirements all apply
Clarity data covers consumers who predominantly use nontraditional financial services and may be underrepresented in the main Experian credit file; do not assume a no-hit on Clarity means no credit activity
The combined Experian Credit + Cashflow Score (2025) incorporates Clarity alternative data alongside traditional credit — if you use this combined score, the underlying Clarity component still carries CRA-notice obligations
