Steps
Verify the transfer switch is a true break-before-make (or properly interlocked) device that makes it physically impossible for the generator and utility to be connected simultaneously.
Confirm the installation falls under NEC Article 702 (optional standby) without any provision for parallel operation with the utility.
If the design includes any intentional paralleling capability (including closed-transition transfer or peak-shaving/demand-response features), recognize that NEC Article 705 interconnection requirements — and likely a utility interconnection agreement — now apply.
Check the specific utility's own interconnection tariff/rules, since some utilities still require notification or a standby-generation application even for non-paralleling standby systems.
Document the transfer scheme (open-transition, non-paralleling) in the permit set to support the 'no interconnection agreement needed' position with the AHJ/utility.
Known gotchas
Adding a closed-transition switch or any load-management feature that intentionally parallels sources — even briefly — moves the job into NEC 705 interconnection territory and typically requires utility coordination that a simple 702 optional-standby job does not.
