Steps
Register as a CPE sponsor through NASBA's National Registry at https://www.nasbaregistry.org/; obtain a sponsor ID and credentials for the reporting system
Understand NASBA's CPE standards: credits are measured in 50-minute contact hours; group-live, group-internet-based, self-study, and blended delivery methods each have specific field of study coding requirements per the NASBA/AICPA Statement on Standards for CPE Programs
For each course offering, submit course data including: course title, delivery method, field of study (from NASBA's 24 approved fields), program level (Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, etc.), CPE credits, and prerequisites
When a CPA completes a course, provide the learner with a Certificate of Completion showing sponsor ID, course title, delivery method, field of study, CPE credits, and completion date for self-reporting to state boards
Report rosters of completions to your state board of accountancy if the board requires sponsor reporting (board requirements vary by state); some states require periodic bulk submission of licensee completion data
Maintain course records for a minimum of 5 years per NASBA standards; state board audits may request completion records going back multiple renewal periods
Known gotchas
NASBA National Registry status does not automatically satisfy all state board CPE requirements; some state boards of accountancy require separate state-level sponsor registration even for NASBA Registry sponsors
Self-study courses have additional requirements under NASBA standards: they must include a final examination that assesses comprehension, with a passing score requirement disclosed upfront
CPE credits for self-study are awarded based on the average completion time as determined by a pretesting process—credits cannot be set arbitrarily and must be supported by documented learning time analysis
