Steps Check the spec for an explicit grade callout; if none is given, apply Custom grade as the standard's default. Apply grade rules only to exposed and semi-exposed surfaces visible after installation, not to concealed structural members. Match lumber/veneer selection criteria (soundness, freedom from wane/pith/shake, sawing method) to the confirmed grade.
