Steps
Confirm the wall has WRB and a level starter strip installed per the current manual before hanging the first course
Center fasteners in the nailing hem/slot and drive them straight and level, not at an angle
Leave roughly 1/32 inch (about a dime's thickness) between the fastener head and the siding hem so the panel can move
Never face-nail or staple through the siding face; lock each course into the one below and overlap per the manual
Leave clearance at corner posts, J-channel, and utility cutouts so panels can expand and contract with temperature
Known gotchas
Driving fasteners tight against the hem is the most common defect and causes buckling or waviness as temperatures change
ASTM D4756, the old vinyl-siding installation practice standard, was withdrawn in 2023 with no replacement — follow the current PEPA/VSI installation manual, not that ASTM standard
The publisher renamed from Vinyl Siding Institute (VSI) to Polymeric Exterior Products Association (PEPA) in 2024; installation guidance is still commonly called 'the VSI manual'
