Steps
Calculate the full connected load per NEC Article 220 to determine what a true whole-home generator would need to supply.
If budget or site constraints favor a smaller unit, evaluate managed-load sizing under NEC 702.4(B): the standby source only needs enough capacity for the maximum load the load-management system (EMS) will permit to be connected simultaneously.
Identify which loads (typically A/C units, electric water heater, dryer, range) will sit under the load-shedding module and confirm the priority/shed logic with the homeowner.
Commission the EMS/load-shedding module to verify it actually sheds the intended circuits before the generator overloads.
Label the panel and ATS documenting the managed-load configuration for future service techs and the AHJ.
Known gotchas
A generator sized only for managed load will nuisance-trip or overload if the load-shedding module is bypassed, misconfigured, or a homeowner adds circuits later without updating it.
Marketing 'whole home' claims from equipment dealers don't override the NEC 220 calculation — verify the connected load yourself rather than relying on a rule-of-thumb kW figure.
