Steps

  1. Check the door's label or listing documentation to identify which fire test method the original listing was based on.
  2. If the door was tested/labeled under the older neutral-pressure method, confirm with the AHJ whether it remains acceptable for continued use as-is or must be brought up to a current listing for the scope of work planned.
  3. For any new installation or full replacement, specify products tested to the current positive-pressure standard, since it is the more demanding basis most manufacturers now test to and most codes reference.
  4. Do not assume an older neutral-pressure listing's performance data translates directly to the newer positive-pressure basis — the tests use different furnace pressure conditions and are not interchangeable.
  5. Document which test basis applies in the compliance report so future inspectors and the AHJ understand the basis of the door's rating.
