Authenticate with Docket Alarm by POSTing to /api/v1/login/ to obtain a login token
Send a GET request to https://www.docketalarm.com/api/v1/case_matcher/ including any combination of available fields: party names, state, approximate filing date, keywords from the case title, or court type
The API returns a ranked list of candidate cases with confidence scores; review the top results and select the match with the highest score and best fit
Use the returned docket number and court to retrieve the full docket via the standard docket endpoint
Iterate and narrow by adding more parameters if the top result confidence score is below your acceptable threshold
Known gotchas
The Case Matcher performs fuzzy matching; a high-confidence score does not guarantee a correct match — always validate the returned case title and parties against your source data
The API is most reliable when at least two identifying attributes are provided; a single partial party name alone can return many low-confidence results
Case Matcher searches Docket Alarm's existing database; it will not surface cases not yet in the system
