Steps
Before tear-off, note any visible signs of past water intrusion (staining, soft spots, bulging) to guide where to inspect first
As siding is removed, systematically inspect the exposed WRB and sheathing for soft spots, delamination, or areas that won't hold a fastener
Use a moisture meter to check suspect areas, and probe or drill small test holes where readings are elevated to assess sheathing/framing condition
Remove and replace any decayed wood down to sound material, and treat remaining framing per standard practice before covering it back up
Document findings with photos and issue a written change order for any additional repair work before proceeding with new siding
