Steps
In the Smartcar Dashboard, add a simulated vehicle by selecting a make/model/year or entering a US VIN
Copy the simulated vehicle's generated credentials from the dashboard
Launch Smartcar Connect with mode=simulated in the Connect URL so the flow authenticates against the simulated vehicle instead of a live OEM login
Complete the Connect flow and exchange the authorization code for an access token exactly as you would for a production vehicle
Call standard endpoints (odometer, fuel/battery, location) against the simulated vehicle and confirm your app handles both supported and unsupported-endpoint error responses
Adjust simulated trip/state data in the dashboard to exercise edge cases (low battery, plugged-in charging) before going live
Known gotchas
Endpoints not supported for the chosen simulated make/model still return the same error shapes as a real vehicle, so don't assume simulator = always-200
Simulated vehicles are tied to the app's test/live mode; a token minted in simulated mode will not resolve a real vehicle and vice versa
Simulator data is static/scripted, not physics-accurate, so it validates plumbing and error handling, not real-world sensor drift
