Steps
Develop a written Construction and Demolition Waste Management Plan before demolition/construction starts, identifying diversion goals, target materials, and destination facilities.
Track all materials leaving the site — landfilled, incinerated, recycled, or salvaged — recording date, weight, material type, and hauler/facility destination for each pickup.
Exclude hazardous materials, land-clearing debris, and materials reused on-site from the waste totals used for credit calculations.
For LEED v4/v4.1 (MRc5), calculate the diversion rate as a percentage of total waste generated and submit supporting documentation through LEED Online.
For LEED v5, confirm whether the project is using a third-party certified recycling facility (actual diversion rate) or defaulting to the standard commingled-waste diversion assumption, since the separate waste-management-plan prerequisite from v4 was folded into the credit requirements.
Known gotchas
LEED v5 removed the standalone C&D Waste Management Planning prerequisite that existed in v4/v4.1 — don't submit documentation structured for the old prerequisite without checking the current credit language.
Diversion claims without facility-level, third-party verified data may be capped at the default rate in v5 even if actual on-site sorting performance was higher.
