Steps
Set controller setpoints according to the state/local code or facility permit requirements that apply to the venue, rather than a single universal mV number, since acceptable ORP/FC targets vary by jurisdiction.
Calibrate the pH and ORP probes on a documented schedule using fresh calibration/reference solution, and inspect probes for biofilm, scale, or cracked membranes that skew readings.
Run a manual FC/pH test (DPD or FAS-DPD) at the interval required by code or facility policy and compare it against the controller's simultaneous readout.
If controller and manual readings diverge beyond an acceptable margin, recalibrate or replace the probe before trusting the controller for dosing decisions.
Log both controller and manual readings so drift over time is visible, not just a single point-in-time comparison.
Known gotchas
ORP readings are suppressed by high cyanuric acid relative to actual sanitizer strength, so an ORP-only controller can under- or over-read true disinfection power in heavily stabilized pools.
Probes drift with normal use over weeks, not just after obvious fouling — a probe that 'looks clean' can still be miscalibrated.
Most public-pool codes still require periodic manual test confirmation regardless of automation; don't treat controller readings as a substitute for the manual testing your permit requires.
