3. Select a top-sealing damper product that is listed/rated for the specific chimney type (masonry or factory-built) per the damper manufacturer's documentation — do not assume universal fit across chimney types
4. Install the damper assembly at the top of the flue per the manufacturer's instructions, ensuring the gasket seal seats properly against the flue opening when closed and the cable/control mechanism is accessible from the firebox
5. Verify the damper does not obstruct draft when open and fully seals when closed, testing operation before completing the job
6. Explain the energy-savings rationale (sealing the flue at the top prevents conditioned air loss and reduces cold-air downdrafts compared to a leaky throat damper) and any manufacturer warranty terms to the customer
