Steps
Register for a Trade.gov Data Services Platform account and API key at developer.trade.gov.
Identify the FTA partner country you need — the API only covers countries with a US free trade agreement (currently includes Australia, Bahrain, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Morocco, Nicaragua, Oman, Panama, Peru, Singapore, and South Korea).
Call the Tariff Rates API endpoint with the HTS code and partner country as query parameters, authenticated with your API key.
Parse the JSON response for the applicable preferential tariff rate/staging category under that FTA.
For any commodity or country not covered by a listed FTA, fall back to the USITC HTS general/special rate columns instead, since this API is scoped only to FTA partner data.
Known gotchas
Coverage is limited to the specific FTA partner countries the API documents — it is not a general worldwide tariff-rate API; use USITC HTS or DataWeb for MFN/global rates.
Requires a registered API key from the Trade.gov developer portal; there is no keyless access.
FTA staging/phase-out schedules change over multi-year tariff elimination periods, so confirm the effective year returned in the response before relying on a rate for a future shipment date.
