Documented steps

Create a standalone environment with uv venv, which defaults to .venv.
Run commands inside the project environment with uv run <command>, or activate it first.
Run a one-off dependency-injected tool with uvx <tool>, for example uvx ruff check, which runs in a temporary environment.
For pip-style control, use uv pip install, uv pip list, and uv pip freeze against the current environment.

Known gotchas

uv venv replaces venv and virtualenv, and uv installs Python versions itself when needed via uv python install.
uvx runs tools in an isolated temporary environment so they do not pollute the project environment.
uv's pip-style commands do not exactly mirror pip behavior, so consult the pip-compatibility notes for edge cases.
