Steps
Install resilient channel perpendicular to framing per the manufacturer's and assembly's tested spacing
Use fasteners of the correct, typically shorter, length so screws attaching gypsum board to the channel do not penetrate into the framing behind it
Keep fasteners located between framing members, not directly over a stud/joist, to avoid inadvertently bridging the channel
Avoid over-driving screws or adding extra fasteners for holding power, since any rigid contact between the board/channel and the framing defeats the decoupling
Inspect for accidental rigid contact (trim screws, blocking, electrical boxes) that could bridge the resilient channel before closing in the assembly

The most common resilient channel failure is short-circuiting — a screw or rigid connection accidentally bridging the channel to the framing, which silently destroys the acoustic decoupling with no visible sign after finishing
