Steps
Send an OBD-II Mode 06 request to the vehicle's OBD port via an ELM327 or similar adapter
Distinguish continuously-monitored systems (e.g. misfire) from non-continuously-monitored systems (e.g. catalyst), since Mode 06 covers both differently
Parse the response by manufacturer-defined Test ID (TID) and Component ID (CID), since these are not standardized across OEMs
Compare the returned test value against its documented fault/malfunction limit to determine margin, not just pass/fail
Re-run Mode 06 after a repair to confirm the monitor value moved back within its limit before clearing codes
Known gotchas
TIDs/CIDs are manufacturer-defined and not standardized — the same monitored component uses a different Test ID across different OEMs, so a generic Mode 06 parser needs a per-OEM lookup table
Mode 06 raw values require the manufacturer's scaling/limit definitions to be meaningful; the raw numbers alone don't indicate pass/fail without that context
