Steps
Install Icecast and locate the sample icecast.xml config file, typically in /etc/icecast2/ or /usr/local/etc.
Edit icecast.xml to set the hostname (DNS name or IP address used in stream directory listings) for the deployment.
Change the default source-password (used by encoders/source clients to connect) and admin-password (used for the admin web interface) from their sample values.
Configure the listen-socket block with the desired port and bind-address for client and listener connections.
Start the Icecast service, connect a source client using the source password to begin streaming, and verify listeners can connect at the configured mount point.
Known gotchas
Leaving the sample source-password or admin-password unchanged lets anyone who finds the default values hijack the stream or admin panel.
The hostname setting affects URLs shown in directory listings (e.g., YP directory submissions), not just internal routing, so an incorrect value breaks public stream discovery even though local streaming still works.
logdir, webroot, and adminroot paths must be writable/readable by the user Icecast runs as, or the server fails to start.
