Steps
Start at Installer 1 (INST1): a non-renewable, entry-level certificate with no prior experience required, built around the IN101 training course.
Sit the INST1 hands-on exam first — the written exam (2 hours, 75 questions from BICSI's ITSIMM) can only be scheduled after the hands-on portion is passed.
Progress to Installer 2, Copper (INSTC) or Optical Fiber (INSTF): eligibility requires either 6 months of verifiable full-time structured cabling field experience or completion of Installer 1.
Pass the INSTC/INSTF hands-on exam (six tasks, 20-minute limit each) and the 2-hour, 100-question written exam.
Advance to Technician (TECH), which requires holding Installer 2 as a prerequisite; the hands-on exam expands to 12 tasks (20 min each) plus a 2-hour, 100-question written exam.
Known gotchas
Hands-on and written exams are sequenced — the written exam cannot be taken before passing the corresponding hands-on/performance exam.
