Steps
Navigate to the DCA Licensee Lists Overview page (Public Information section)
Open the public information file bundle and locate the Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) agency folder
Download the CSV/XLS extract for that agency
Parse the standard Public Information Record Layout fields (Agency Code, License Type, License Number, Org/Last Name, Address, Original Issue Date, Expiration Date, License Status)
Filter by License Type Code to isolate the specific credential (e.g. Private Patrol Operator, Security Guard Registration, firearms permit)
Known gotchas
REGULATED (California BSIS/DCA licensee dataset): data refreshes automatically only at the start of each month — this file is not a real-time license-verification source; use BSIS's live Verify a License tool for time-sensitive checks
Several DCA-regulated boards (e.g. Contractors State License Board) are explicitly excluded from this bundle and must be queried through their own separate portal
