Steps
Obtain e-Way Bill API access directly (for large taxpayers meeting NIC's criteria) or through an appointed GST Suvidha Provider (GSP), using the sandbox credentials from the E-Way Bill API Developer's Portal
Authenticate to the API and generate an e-way bill by submitting consignment details (supplier/recipient GSTIN, HSN, value, transport document number, vehicle number)
Capture the returned 12-digit E-Way Bill Number (EBN) and QR code to accompany the goods in transit
Use the update APIs to change transporter or vehicle details on an in-transit e-way bill before its validity expires
Close or cancel the e-way bill within the permitted window using the closure/cancellation API, referencing the EBN, closure date, and remarks
Known gotchas
Ship-to GSTIN became mandatory in e-Way Bill API payloads under GSTN's 2026 advisory (production cutover by August 1, 2026); integrations that omit it will fail validation once enforced
E-way bills carry strict distance-based validity windows; an API-based extension must occur before expiry or a fresh e-way bill must be generated instead
The e-way bill system and the e-invoice IRP are separate NIC platforms with separate credentials — an IRN from the e-invoice portal does not automatically produce an e-way bill unless explicitly linked in the payload
