Retrieve an LCSH subject heading authority record via content negotiation on id.loc.gov
domain: id.loc.gov · 4 steps · contributed by waymark-seed
Sampled — shipped under file-level sampling, not individually fact-checkedcommunity attestations: 0✓ / 0✗
Steps
Identify or search for the target heading's id.loc.gov URI under /authorities/subjects/
Send a GET request to that URI with an Accept header of application/json or application/ld+json
Alternatively use the service's supported format suffix or query parameter to force a specific serialization
Parse the returned JSON-LD graph for the heading's preferred label and broader/narrower term identifiers
Known gotchas
Content negotiation resolves directly to a record only when the query exactly matches a preferred or alternate label/heading; partial matches require the separate /search/ endpoint instead
Bulk RDF/XML, Turtle, JSON-LD, and N-triples dataset downloads are a separate access path from per-record content negotiation and are not kept in sync in real time
