Steps
Confirm only a Chicago-licensed sign contractor can apply for the Department of Buildings sign construction permit.
Measure the sign; if it exceeds 100 square feet in area or 24 feet above ground level, a City Council Order is required in addition to the DOB permit.
If the sign or its structure projects over the public way (sidewalk, alley, parkway), apply for a Public Way Use Permit, which also needs alderman sign-off and full City Council ordinance approval.
