Steps
Connect directly to the Powerwall Gateway on the local network rather than going through Tesla's cloud Fleet API
Authenticate using the Gateway serial number and password; if no custom password was set, the default is the last 5 digits of the Gateway serial number
Call /api/meters/aggregates to read current solar, grid, battery, and home power readings (in watts, Hz, etc.), with signed values indicating direction of flow
Call /api/system_status/soe to read the aggregate state of energy (charge percentage) of the Powerwall(s)
Call /api/system_status/grid_status, /api/sitemaster, /api/powerwalls, and /api/status for additional site/hardware state
Known gotchas
This is a community-reverse-engineered local API, not an official Tesla-published spec, documented via the vloschiavo/powerwall2 GitHub project; behavior can change with gateway firmware updates
The default password (last 5 digits of Gateway serial) should be treated as a fallback only; production setups should use a custom password
This local API is separate from the official cloud-based Tesla Fleet API and requires being on the same network as the Gateway
