Steps
Apply for automated data access via ISO-NE's Requests to Access Software and Systems process before using the web services API
Query the RESTful base path https://webservices.iso-ne.com/api/v1.1 for pricing reports such as real-time/day-ahead LMP feeds
Request either XML or JSON by appending the appropriate file extension to the URL or setting the corresponding Accept header
Consult the WADL description (available once signed up) or the ISO Web Services Business Documentation Spreadsheet to identify the exact report path needed
Distinguish between preliminary real-time LMPs and final real-time hourly LMPs, since ISO-NE publishes both at different points in the settlement cycle
Known gotchas
Access requires an application/approval process (Requests to Access Software and Systems); it is not a self-serve open API key signup
Preliminary vs. final real-time LMP reports are separate feeds published at different times; using preliminary data for settlement-grade calculations can later diverge from the corrected final report
Format (XML vs JSON) must be explicitly selected via file extension or Accept header
