Submit a full authorization for the order total, setting the capture delay to manual in your Adyen merchant account settings
When the first shipment is ready, call the capture endpoint with the partial amount and the original PSP reference; record the capture PSP reference
For each subsequent shipment, call the capture endpoint again with the remaining or partial amount and the same original PSP reference
Ensure the sum of all capture amounts does not exceed the authorized amount; Adyen will reject over-captures
On the final capture, optionally pass a flag indicating it is the last capture to allow the authorization hold to be released for any uncaptured remainder
Reconcile capture PSP references in your order management system to track which shipment maps to which captured amount
Known gotchas
Authorization hold expiry windows vary by card scheme and issuer (commonly 7-30 days); if not all captures are completed before expiry, the remaining uncaptured amount is lost
Some issuers will release the full hold after the first partial capture, making subsequent captures against the same auth fail; test across issuer categories in staging
Adyen's multi-capture availability depends on the payment method and acquiring contract; confirm support for each payment method before building the flow
