Steps
Assign/confirm the designated impairment coordinator responsible for the property's water-based fire protection impairment program
Before taking the system out of service, verify the extent and expected duration of the impairment and inspect the affected areas to assess increased risk (fire watch needs)
Notify all required parties before impairment begins: fire department, alarm monitoring company, insurance carrier, and other applicable AHJs
Post an impairment tag at the system control valve, the fire department connection, and any other AHJ-required locations
Upon completion, verify required inspections/tests confirm the system is fully operational before removing the tag, then notify the same parties that protection is restored
Log the full impairment event (start, cause, duration, notifications, restoration verification) in the property's fire protection records
Known gotchas
Emergency (unplanned) impairments, like an accidental main break, still trigger the same notification and fire-watch obligations as planned impairments, just compressed in time
Restoring the system without re-verifying it (e.g., just closing the valve back up after a repair) doesn't satisfy Chapter 15 -- a functional check confirming operability is required before the tag comes down
Extended impairments beyond an AHJ-set threshold frequently trigger additional requirements like a formal fire watch log or temporary protection plan that a generic impairment program may not automatically include
