Use Ed-Fi when you need deep, standards-aligned SIS data (attendance detail, assessment results, program participation) and the district/state already runs an Ed-Fi ODS.
Use OneRoster as the lighter-weight, widely-implemented fallback for basic roster and gradebook exchange when a SIS vendor supports it directly.
Use Clever or ClassLink first for fast time-to-value when a district is already provisioned on that middleware, since they broker SSO and normalized roster sync without integrating the underlying SIS directly.
Fall back to direct OneRoster or Ed-Fi integration when a district isn't on Clever/ClassLink, or when you need data beyond what the middleware layer exposes.
Design a canonical internal roster schema with a thin adapter per source system, since ID stability, status enums, and delta-cursor mechanics differ across all four options.
Known gotchas
Clever and ClassLink don't hold source-of-truth SIS data — they broker access, so gaps in their sync may require falling back to a direct SIS integration anyway.
