Steps
Obtain GRI 14: Mining Sector 2024, effective for reports covering periods starting January 2026, from globalreporting.org.
Map the organization's existing GRI Universal Standards disclosures (GRI 1-3) to the roughly 25 material topics GRI 14 identifies for mining (tailings, biodiversity, emissions, community engagement, conflict-affected areas, etc.).
For each material topic, use the sector standard's guidance to determine site-level disclosure requirements, since GRI 14 calls for site-level (not just corporate-aggregate) reporting to support local accountability.
Cross-check overlapping requirements against ICMM member commitments, since ICMM members have reported against GRI Standards for over 15 years as a condition of membership.
Reconcile against other frameworks the site may also report to (IRMA, Copper Mark) where GRI 14 explicitly notes alignment, to avoid duplicate data collection efforts.
Known gotchas
GRI 14 is a disclosure/reporting standard, not a data API — "integration" means building internal data pipelines that produce the required disclosures, not calling an external service.
Because GRI 14 pushes reporting down to the site level, corporate ESG systems built only for aggregate/consolidated reporting will need new site-level data collection to comply.
