Steps
Print a test chart (e.g., a ~1586-2033 patch chart in i1Profiler, or the equivalent Barbieri chart) on the exact substrate/ink/print-mode combination to be profiled
Measure the chart with the i1Profiler-connected instrument, or let a Barbieri Spectro LFP auto-measure the roll/sheet via reflection or transmission
Set the correct measurement condition (M0/M1/M2/M3 per ISO 13655) to match the media — e.g., optically brightened media needs M1
Generate the ICC profile and install it to the OS color folder (Windows spool\drivers\color or macOS ColorSync/Profiles) or load it directly in the RIP
Re-linearize and re-profile whenever ink batch, media, or print mode changes materially
Known gotchas
Using the wrong M-condition (e.g., M0 on optically brightened banner media) produces a profile that measures fine but mismatches under real viewing light
Profiles are substrate- and ink-set-specific; reusing one media's profile for a visually similar but different substrate causes color drift
Barbieri's automated roll/sheet feeding covers most rigid/flexible large-format materials, but unusual substrates (textured/rigid boards) may still need manual chart handling
