Generate an official species list for the project location through the IPaC portal
If northern long-eared bat (federally endangered since November 2022) or tricolored bat appears on the list, run the current Rangewide NLEB/TCB Determination Key rather than the older NLEB-only key
Answer DKey questions about tree-clearing timing relative to summer occupancy, pup, and winter torpor seasons to determine if a seasonal clearing restriction or survey applies
For ongoing projects with an older species list/DKey result, request a fresh official species list, since the NLEB consultation range has changed
Document the IPaC-generated results and any recommended conservation measures in the project file before scheduling clearing
Known gotchas
The tricolored bat remains only proposed (not finalized) for federal listing as of mid-2026 - final NLEB/TCB guidance and DKey outcomes for TCB don't take full ESA-compliance effect until/unless a final listing rule is issued; treat TCB findings as a planning safeguard, not yet a hard legal trigger
IPaC species lists are not a substitute for a formal Section 7 consultation or take permit where one is actually required
Old IPaC results run under the prior single-species NLEB key should be re-run under the current combined DKey
