Steps

  1. Determine whether the deployment falls under a jurisdiction mandating CSIP (California Rule 21, Hawaii Rule 14H, or similar), since IEEE 2030.5/CSIP compliance is typically a regulatory interconnection requirement rather than an optional integration choice.
  2. Implement the subset of IEEE 2030.5 function sets CSIP specifies (SunSpec's implementation guide narrows the full standard's function sets to the ones utilities actually require) for the charger's DER capability, not the entire IEEE 2030.5 standard.
  3. Register the EV charger/EVSE with the utility's IEEE 2030.5 server (or through an aggregator acting as the CSIP-speaking intermediary) so it can receive DERControl events (e.g. curtailment or power limit schedules) from the utility.
  4. Have the charger or its local aggregator translate received IEEE 2030.5 DERControl instructions into a charger-native control action — commonly by mapping to an OCPP SetChargingProfile call if the charger is OCPP-managed, since IEEE 2030.5 does not itself speak OCPP.
  5. Pursue UL 1741 SC certification testing (which validates IEEE 2030.5 protocol conformance) if the charger needs to be certified for utility interconnection programs requiring it, particularly for bidirectional/V2G-capable chargers.
