Steps

  1. Crawl the site (and any list of legacy/historical URLs) following redirects to their final destination, recording the full hop sequence for each
  2. Flag any chain of more than one redirect hop and any loop that never resolves to a 200
  3. Update internal links and canonical tags to point directly at the final destination URL rather than the first hop in the chain
  4. Update the redirect rule itself (web server config or CDN rule) so it points straight to the final URL, removing intermediate hops
  5. Re-crawl to confirm every entry point now resolves in a single hop, and re-submit affected URLs for recrawl if indexing was affected
