Transfer ownership of a DocuSign envelope from one user to another using Envelope Transfer Rules

Steps

1. Confirm the account has the Transfer Custody feature enabled and that the calling user holds Administrator rights; only admins can create or manage envelope transfer rules.
2. POST to the EnvelopeTransferRules resource to define a rule, specifying eventType (e.g. triggered on user deactivation/removal), fromGroups (the source group whose envelopes are eligible), toUser (new owner), toFolder, carbonCopyOriginalOwner, and enabled.
3. GET the EnvelopeTransferRules resource (list) to review existing transfer rules and confirm the new rule was created.
4. Use the EnvelopeTransferRules update operation (PUT) to enable, disable, or modify a single rule, or the bulk update operation to change the status of multiple rules at once.
5. Understand that transfer rules act automatically when the eventType condition fires (e.g., a user in fromGroups is deactivated), moving their envelopes to toUser/toFolder, rather than performing a synchronous, on-demand transfer of one specific envelope.
6. For a one-off manual reassignment of a single envelope or template, check whether the account's Transfer Custody UI action fits better, since EnvelopeTransferRules is rule/event-driven rather than a single-call transfer of one envelope.
