Steps
Take the full EORI number including its two-letter country code prefix from the trading partner
Submit the number to the European Commission's EORI number validation page/service
Confirm whether the number is returned as valid, and if so review the registered company name and address details returned
For a Northern Ireland (XI) EORI number, use this same EU validation service rather than the UK HMRC checker, since XI numbers are held in the EU EORI register
Log the validation result alongside the shipment or customs declaration record for audit purposes
Known gotchas
The EU service and the separate UK/GB EORI checker cover different registers, so an EORI issued by an EU member state will not resolve on the UK checker and vice versa
A validation match returns whatever registered name/address data the issuing member state has on file, which may lag a recent business name or address change
This is a simple free lookup with no authentication, but it is not the same system as the VIES VAT number validation service despite similar presentation
