Navigate the NCEES FS/PS exam pathway and use NCEES Records for multi-state licensure

Steps

1. Take the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam first, typically near graduation from an ABET-accredited surveying program or after meeting the state's pre-licensure education/experience requirement, to become a Surveyor-in-Training.
2. Accrue the work experience your home state requires (commonly around four years under a licensed surveyor) before sitting for the Principles and Practice of Surveying (PS) exam.
3. Register for and pass the PS exam through your NCEES MyNCEES account, then apply to your home state board for initial PS/RPLS licensure (note some states, like Texas, additionally require a state-specific exam after the PS).
4. To pursue licensure in additional states, open an NCEES Record in your MyNCEES account — NCEES compiles verified transcripts, employment history, references, and exam results into one reusable file.
5. Have NCEES transmit your Record to each additional state board you're applying to via comity; pay the applicable transmittal fee for each state and complete any state-specific supplemental requirements (exam, law course, etc.).
