Integrate a boxless returns drop-off network into a returns flow

Steps

1. Identify a boxless or label-free drop-off network provider (e.g., Happy Returns by UPS, Amazon Counter, or carrier-specific drop-off programs) and review their API or partner integration documentation for return initiation and QR code generation.
2. At return initiation, generate a return authorization in your OMS and call the drop-off network's API to create a return record; the API typically returns a QR code or short code that the customer presents at the drop-off location instead of a label.
3. Surface drop-off location finder functionality (usually a map widget or API returning nearby locations by postal code) in your returns portal so customers can find a convenient drop-off point.
4. Configure the network's webhook or status callback to notify your system when the package is dropped off and when it has been consolidated and handed to the carrier — this is the point at which you should credit the customer's refund if your policy is return-receipt-triggered.
5. Reconcile consolidated return shipments: boxless networks batch individual returns into consolidated shipments, so the tracking at your receiving dock is a consolidated manifest rather than individual tracking numbers — ensure your returns receiving system can match consolidated manifests to individual return records.
6. Measure drop-off completion rates vs. label-based returns to quantify the program's impact on return rate, cost per return, and time-to-refund.
