Steps
Select the ignition oven burn method (AASHTO T308) or, where required by the DOT, the solvent extraction method (AASHTO T164) as the specified alternative.
Apply the DOT-required calibration correction factor specific to that plant's current aggregate blend before reporting binder content.
Run gradation analysis (AASHTO T30) on the burned aggregate residue to check for any oven-induced gradation shift, where required.
Compare the corrected binder content result against the JMF target and the DOT's allowed production tolerance band.
Log results for use in the project's statistical QC/pay-factor calculations.
Known gotchas
Correction factors are specific to the aggregate source/blend in use and must be re-established under the DOT's protocol whenever the aggregate source or blend changes — reusing an old correction factor skews reported binder content.
Ignition ovens can alter fine-aggregate gradation during the burn, so some DOTs require a companion gradation correction that's easy to skip if only binder content is being tracked.
Some state DOTs still require or accept solvent extraction (T164) instead of or alongside ignition oven testing — assuming ignition oven is universally accepted skips a spec check.
