Steps
TIA-568.0 (Generic Telecommunications Cabling for Customer Premises), current edition -E (2020), sets the overall generic cabling framework independent of application.
TIA-568.1 (Commercial Building Telecommunications Infrastructure) covers premises topology/architecture; check for its 568.1-E-1 addendum (2023), which specifically adds cabling requirements for wireless access points.
TIA-568.2 (Balanced Twisted-Pair Cabling and Components) is the copper performance spec; edition -E (October 2024) is current and replaced -D, adding DC resistance unbalance specs and higher (90W) PoE support.
TIA-568.3 (Optical Fiber Cabling and Components), currently edition -E (September 2022), covers fiber media and connector performance.
TIA-568.4 (Broadband Coaxial Cabling and Components) remains at edition -D (2017) — no -E has been published for this sub-document, so don't assume every 568 series document is on the same letter.
TIA-568.5 covers balanced single twisted-pair cabling (added for IoT/sensor/single-pair Ethernet use cases); check for its addenda before citing a specific clause.
Known gotchas
The sub-documents do not revise on the same schedule or letter — 568.2 is on -E while 568.4 is still -D; always confirm the specific sub-document's current edition rather than assuming a series-wide letter.
Older projects/RFPs may still cite 568-C or -D wording; confirm which edition a contract actually calls out before designing to it.
